We are sure that you often hear how a domestic product from our area needs to be protected. But what does that mean? What does it mean to protect the product, its name and geographical origin? Do we know what this gets and what does is guarantee? We want to talk with you about this today.
What is an indication for PDO and PGI?
Products that are related with a particular place, region or locality, those that carry the producton characteristics specific only for that area and whose raw materials are used only from that geographical area are marked with a geographical indication. Such products represent much more than one designation: they are guardians of a local spirit, tradition, recipes that are passed down from generation to generation, and – they are keepers of cultural heritage. Coming from one area, they carry all of its characteristics, by which they are recognizable.
In order to one product should carry this designation, it must fullfil the following conditions:
- must originate from a certain geographical area
- its quality it must comes out from the natural characteristics of that area, which include micro and macro climate, soil type, but also knowledge for centurries kept and passed from generation to generation – thus, it includes a traditonal recipe that is maintained despite all the changes.

In order to one product should be marked with a protected designation of origin (PDO) and protected geographical indication (PGI), there must be a relationship between its charasteristics and the geographical origin it originates from.

The ndication of PDO and PGI carries natural products such as water, then agricultural (fruits, vegetables…), food products (kulen, sausage, cheese, kajmak…) as well as products of domestic crafts – handicrafts (like our Pirot is famous for weaving rugs).
