When great-great-grandfather Maksim made the first candies and caramels in 1885, he didn’t realize that he had begun a tradition with which his descendans would be proud of. He didn’t imagine neither that this tradition will be conveyed from generation to generation, from father to son, already a centure and a half.
And how it all started…
They say that grandfather Maksim was the first candy man in Svilajnac. He was favoured by all people, especially children, who would run into his modest store whenever they feel the scent of homemade caramels, tulumba and baklava. He was widely known for his skill and someone who constantly perfect his craft.
From father to son, than to great-grandsons and grandsons…
Maxim has conveyed all knowledge and skills that he accumulated throw all years of life, to his son Krsta. Krsta also was popular – on his bike he had driven a small refrigerator with homemade ice cream and a caramel basket. In order to satisfy anyone, he made a new tastes, so production of handmade sweets became even more diverse. Later, just like his father, he conveyed love for candy to his son Radisav, than to grandson Milorad and today… today, the youngest bearer of this tradition, Milan Maksimovic, does the same thing as his great-great grandfother once upon a time. He has never failed a traditional recipe, ingredients that are completely homemade without any additions and the most important: love for caramels that keeps the centuries long family story.
Why are Maksimovic caramels so special?
Generations and generations have grown to unique authentic taste of homemade caramels. Great-great grandfather Maxim wanted only one thing: continuous top quality of caramels and his descendentes have never disobeyed his desire. Maksimovic caramels are exceptional becuse they do not contain any artificial additives: no additives, no colours, no sweeteners, no preservatives – it is naturaly sweet and has a natural aroma. Although it is time when modern technology assumes a role in production, Maksimovic caramels have resisted this challenge and they are still made manually. To every step in production is paid attention. You will not find caramels in unlimited quantities, on the contrary – they are there for those who know value authenticity, tradition, tastes that do not pass and the most important: permanent quality.
Milan, why did you accept today a work that started your great-graet-grandfather?
– I decided to continue this tradition because of love for sweets and craft that have been conveyed from generation to generation for so many years have been stronger than any time and all the changes that we have encountered along the way. I wanted to remind everyone that there is no better thing than homemade tastes and show that, although industrial production has a primacy, there are still those who love and value local products. Caramels has a special taste and structure, and because no one produce them in the true, traditional way.
Homemade milk caramel is ideal with the first morning coffee while we are still sleepy, planning our day – it will remind us that the most beatiful never goes through.
